The UN Forum on Sustainability Standards (UNFSS) is open to all UN Member States without a minimum membership requirement, but particularly seeks and facilitates developing country participation.

The Steering Committee consisting of the five collaborating UN agencies FAO, UNIDO, ITC, UNEP and UNCTAD and a multi-stakeholder Advisory Panel (composed of some 20 experts representing the key target groups (i.e. producers, traders, consumers, standard setters, certification bodies, trade diplomats, relevant NGOs and researchers).  The Steering Committee facilitates the coordination and management of the Forum whereas the distinct role of the Advisory Panel is to provide guidance on the development of the Forum, linkages to information gathering and required stakeholder support for the analytical, empirical and capacity-building tasks identified by Forum participants. However, it is the latter group that sets the direction, main tasks and priorities through regular UNFSS meetings.
